Monitoring of ground vehicles at airport

Initial situation

A fleet management system for motorized GSE (Ground Support Equipment) was implemented at a leading airport in Europe. In addition to vehicle data for maintenance and service purposes, the position of the vehicle had to be recorded with a vehicle computer. In this way, real-time localization of the vehicles enabled considerable cost savings to be achieved through the optimized use of the vehicles. In addition, the recorded operating data could be used for further rationalizations.

Conditions

To connect the communication computer, a connection to several control units and to a series of status signals was required. On the one hand, the coupling was realized via serial RS485 and RS232 interfaces, as well as a CAN interface. In addition, a series of status signals had to be processed via digital and analog inputs. Due to various conditions, the reception conditions for the position detection were particularly demanding, so that a special, highly sensitive GPS unit was used. The powerful computer in connection with the open Linux system allowed the required implementation of the extensive software for the preprocessing of the data as well as the realization of the VPN connection structure for the integration into the existing infrastructure.
